11 dead after tipper truck and bus collide on Accra-Kumasi highway

At least 10 people have died and seven others are unconscious after a tipper truck collided with a Sprinter bus at Ofankor Barrier on Ghana's Accra-Kumasi Highway.

The crash happened early on Thursday morning, leaving the bus badly damaged and several passengers trapped inside.

Emergency crews were sent to the scene to rescue those trapped and treat survivors.

The Ghana National Fire Service (GNFS) said its teams were still working to free victims from the wreckage and take those with serious injuries to hospital.

A female passenger whose legs were reportedly severed in the collision was among those taken from the scene by ambulance.

GNFS officer ADO1 Alex King Nartey said the situation remained volatile as rescue operations continued.

He said the final number of casualties had not yet been confirmed.

The crash has caused significant disruption to traffic on the busy highway, with part of the road temporarily restricted to allow emergency teams to work.

The GNFS has urged motorists travelling from Pokuase and Amasaman towards Ofankor and Accra to use the outer lane and approach the area with extreme caution.

Drivers have also been asked to give way to emergency responders as rescue and vehicle-clearance operations continue.

The Accra-Kumasi Highway is one of Ghana's main transport corridors and carries heavy traffic between the capital and the country's central and northern regions.
