Google and the African Institute for Mathematical Sciences invest $50 million to establish a world-class AI lab in the Ghanaian capital.
Google and the African Institute for Mathematical Sciences (AIMS) have jointly announced a $50 million investment to establish a Pan-African AI Research Centre in Accra. The facility will focus on developing AI solutions for challenges unique to the African continent.
The centre, located at the Accra Innovation City campus, will host 100 resident researchers and 200 graduate fellows in its first year. Research pillars include AI for healthcare diagnostics, agricultural yield optimization, and natural language processing for African languages.
"Accra has the talent pipeline, the infrastructure, and the policy environment to become Africa's AI capital," said Google Africa Managing Director Nitin Gajria at the launch event.
