Accra-Tema Motorway Expansion Enters Phase Two With Chinese Financing

Construction on the second phase of the Accra-Tema Motorway expansion is set to begin next month following the signing of a $500 million financing agreement with Sinohydro Corporation. The project will widen the 19-kilometer corridor from four to six lanes and introduce electronic toll collection.

Roads and Highways Minister Kwasi Amoako-Atta confirmed the timeline at a press briefing, noting that the expansion is critical to easing the daily gridlock that affects an estimated 60,000 vehicles.

Phase one, which focused on interchange upgrades at Tetteh Quarshie and the Tema roundabout, was completed last year. The new phase includes dedicated bus rapid transit lanes, pedestrian overpasses, and improved drainage systems.

Environmental groups have raised concerns about the project's impact on wetland areas near Sakumono, though the EPA's environmental impact assessment was approved with conditions in March.
