African Union Secures Permanent Seat in G20, Reshaping Global Governance

The African Union's permanent membership in the G20 became effective this year, giving the continent a dedicated seat at the table of the world's most influential economic forum. AU Commission Chairperson Moussa Faki Mahamat described it as "the culmination of decades of advocacy."

The AU's participation will focus on advocating for reform of the international financial architecture, including IMF quota redistribution and World Bank lending terms that better serve developing nations.

"Africa contributes 17% of the world's population but has historically had minimal influence over the rules governing global trade and finance. That changes now," said Ghana's representative to the AU.
