Bawku SHS Unrest: Military deployed after teacher injured

Military personnel have been deployed to Bawku Senior High School in Ghana's Upper East Region following a violent disturbance by students that resulted in damage to school property and injuries to a teacher.

The unrest began at about 01:00 local time on Monday, according to local education authorities, with students reportedly causing extensive destruction across the school campus and disrupting normal activities.

The Bawku Municipal Director of Education, Isaac Abweko Azasoo, said preliminary reports suggest the violence was triggered after school authorities prevented alleged examination malpractice involving some final-year students.

Mr Azasoo said tensions escalated, leading to attacks on staff members.

According to him, one teacher was allegedly abducted during the disturbances, while another was assaulted and sustained injuries.

The injured teacher received initial treatment at a local health facility before being referred to Bolgatanga for further medical care.

Authorities say military personnel were subsequently deployed to the school to restore calm and prevent further violence.

"The military was brought in to prevent any further escalation of the situation and to ensure the safety of staff and students," Mr Azasoo said.

Officials have not yet provided a full assessment of the damage caused during the incident.

Investigations are under way to establish the circumstances surrounding the unrest. No arrests had been announced at the time of reporting.
