Dennis Miracles Aboagye released after meeting GH¢50m bail as EOCO probe continues

Dennis Miracles Aboagye, the 2028 campaign director for former Vice-President Dr Mahamudu Bawumia, has been released from the custody of the Economic and Organised Crime Office (EOCO) after fulfilling the conditions attached to his GH¢50 million bail.

His release on Tuesday evening marks the latest development in an investigation into alleged financial and procurement irregularities amounting to about GH¢55 million during his tenure as Executive Secretary of the

Inter-Ministerial Coordinating Committee on Decentralisation (IMCCoD).

Before his release, EOCO investigators escorted Mr Aboagye to one of his residences at Larteh, where officials conducted a search as part of the bail execution process.

The visit, according to sources familiar with the investigation, forms part of standard procedures used by investigators to verify a suspect's residence and establish locations where the individual can be reached while investigations continue.

Mr Aboagye had been granted bail on Monday in the sum of GH¢50 million, with three sureties, two of whom were required to justify the value of the security offered.

His legal team had earlier indicated that their immediate priority was to satisfy the bail conditions rather than challenge the terms imposed.

"The processes toward satisfying the bail conditions have commenced. The legal team is actively working to secure his release as soon as possible," sources close to the defence had said before his release.

The lawyers also stated that they had no immediate plans to seek a review or variation of the bail conditions, preferring instead to ensure full compliance to secure their client's freedom.

Mr Aboagye was arrested by EOCO at the Kotoka International Airport as part of an ongoing investigation into alleged procurement and financial irregularities at IMCCoD.

Investigators allege that the suspected irregularities involve approximately GH¢55 million in public funds.

The former IMCCoD Executive Secretary was arrested together with the Secretariat's former accountant, Gerald Appiah, who is also assisting investigators.

EOCO has not publicly disclosed the full details of the alleged transactions under investigation, but officials say inquiries are continuing as they seek to establish whether any financial offences were committed.

The case has attracted significant public and political attention because of Mr Aboagye's prominent role within the opposition New Patriotic Party (NPP) and his appointment as campaign director for Dr Mahamudu Bawumia's expected 2028 presidential campaign.

Although he has now been released on bail, the investigation remains active, and EOCO is expected to continue gathering evidence before determining whether any criminal charges will be filed.

Under Ghana's criminal justice system, bail does not amount to an acquittal or the termination of investigations. It allows a suspect to remain at liberty while cooperating with investigators and complying with conditions imposed by law.

Mr Aboagye has not been convicted of any offence. The allegations against him remain under investigation, and he is entitled to the presumption of innocence unless and until proven guilty by a court of competent jurisdiction.
