ECG announces nationwide meter audit with no separate advance notices

The Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) says it will begin a nationwide meter audit across its operational areas, with customers expected to grant authorised inspectors access without receiving separate advance notices.

The exercise will cover prepaid and postpaid meters, Special Load Tariff installations and associated wiring. ECG says the checks are intended to curb electricity theft, reduce commercial losses and ensure electricity consumption is measured and billed accurately.

    No individual appointment letters

ECG said its public announcement serves as official notice of the audit. It will therefore issue no further prior notices, appointment letters or advance notifications.

Customers, landlords, estate managers, property managers, facility managers and security personnel have been advised to prepare to give authorised personnel access.

According to the company, the absence of a separate notification letter should not be used to deny, restrict or delay entry.

The inspections will seek to establish the integrity of metering systems and check that installations accurately record electricity use.

    How to verify an inspector

ECG said all employees and authorised agents taking part in the audit will carry official ECG identification cards.

Customers are encouraged to verify those identities before granting access by:

    Calling ECG’s Customer Call Centre on 0302 611 611.

Dialling *226# on any mobile network to use its USSD verification service.

The company cited Regulation 4(h) of the Public Utilities Regulatory Commission (Customer Service) Regulations, 2020 (L.I. 2413), as the basis for its request for access.

According to ECG, the provision requires consumers to allow a public utility employee or agent onto their premises, subject to the production of a verifiable identity card.

For customers, the immediate step is to ensure that anyone responsible for access to their property knows about the exercise and the available identity verification channels.
