Fire damages family home of late Mohammed Murtala in Tamale
Two children were rescued after a fire broke out at the Tamale family home of former Environment Minister Mohammed Murtala, who died in last year's military helicopter crash.
A fire has damaged the family home of late Ghanaian Environment Minister Mohammed Murtala in Tamale, with firefighters rescuing two children trapped inside the building.
The Ghana National Fire Service (GNFS) said it received a distress call about the blaze at 3:29 p.m. and arrived at the scene eight minutes later.
The fire was brought under control after firefighters battled the flames at the property, where nine of the 17 rooms were affected.
Northern Regional Public Relations Officer of the GNFS, Assistant Divisional Officer I Hudu Baba, said the two children were rescued when officers arrived.
"Two schoolchildren who were trapped in one of the rooms were rescued by firefighters upon arrival," he told Channel One News.
He said investigations had begun to determine the cause of the fire and assess the extent of the damage.
Properties worth thousands of Ghana cedis are reported to have been destroyed in the incident.
Videos circulating on social media showed firefighters working at the scene as residents gathered around the house.
The fire occurred almost a year after Mr Mohammed Murtala, a former Minister for Environment, Science and Technology, died in a military helicopter crash in Ghana's Ashanti Region.
Mr Murtala was among eight people killed when the aircraft crashed in the Adansi area on 6 August 2025 while travelling from Accra to the Ashanti Region for an official assignment.
The victims included Defence Minister Dr Edward Kofi Omane Boamah, Acting Deputy National Security Coordinator Alhaji Limuna Muniru Mohammed, NDC National Vice Chairman Dr Samuel Sarpong, former
Obuasi East parliamentary candidate Samuel Aboagye, and three members of the military crew.
Authorities have not yet established what caused the fire, while investigations continue.
