Police are searching for five remand prisoners after six escaped from Konongo police cells, with one recaptured in Kumasi.
One remand prisoner has been recaptured in Kumasi as authorities move to strengthen security at the station.
Police are searching for five remand prisoners after six escaped from cells at Konongo in the Ashanti Region, with authorities suspecting they used a hole leading to detached washrooms.
One of the escapees has been rearrested in a suburb of Kumasi following a police manhunt.
The Asante Akyem Central Municipal Chief Executive, Dr Ebenezer Ekow Aidoo, confirmed the incident to Citi News and outlined measures to strengthen security at the station.
Authorities believe the prisoners made their way through a hole dug from the cells towards the washrooms before fleeing the premises.
Dr Aidoo said the Municipal Security Council was taking steps to reinforce the cell walls and improve lighting at the station.
Security cameras would also be installed to help monitor the premises and prevent further escapes, he said.
He added that the council would ask police to increase the number of officers on duty, particularly at night. Longer-term plans include building a new police station.
