Ghana and US pursue others over power plant bribery scheme

Ghanaian and US authorities are working together to pursue other people allegedly linked to a bribery scheme involving a power plant contract, Ghana's Deputy Attorney General Justice Srem-Sai has said.

The investigation follows the conviction in the United States of Ghanaian businessman and former Tema Oil Refinery (TOR) managing director Asante Kwaku Berko.

A federal jury in Brooklyn, New York, found Mr Berko guilty of charges including conspiracy to violate the US Foreign Corrupt Practices Act and other related offences.

Justice Srem-Sai said Ghana's Attorney-General was working with US authorities to ensure that others implicated in the alleged scheme were brought to justice.

"The Honourable Attorney-General is working with his United States counterparts to bring to book persons who are implicated in the bribery scheme," he said in a social media post.

The case relates to a 2014-2017 contract between the Ghanaian government and a Turkish energy company for the development of a power plant.

Justice Srem-Sai did not identify the other individuals being pursued or disclose details of the joint efforts.

Mr Berko's conviction has renewed scrutiny of the power plant deal and allegations of corruption surrounding its

development.
