Ghana announces major cuts in MTN fibre broadband prices

The Minister for Communication, Digital Technology and Innovations, Sam George, has announced significant reductions in MTN Ghana’s fibre broadband tariffs, following government engagement with the telecoms operator aimed at improving affordability and access to internet services.

In a statement posted on social media on Wednesday, the Minister said discussions with MTN Ghana had resulted in substantial cuts to unlimited fibre broadband packages, describing the development as a response to public calls for cheaper and more reliable connectivity.

Under the revised pricing structure, customers who previously paid GH¢987 for a one-month unlimited 100 Mbps package will now pay GH¢299 for the same service.

Other adjustments include a 300 Mbps unlimited package now priced at GH¢444 per month, while a 500 Mbps unlimited package will cost GH¢999.

“Effective today, fibre broadband prices have crashed,” Mr George wrote.

He said the reductions followed sustained demands from consumers for more affordable, stable and reliable internet services.

“You demanded. We engaged. MTN Ghana has responded,” he stated.

Mr George expressed appreciation to MTN Ghana’s management and staff for agreeing to the new pricing structure, saying the company had responded positively to concerns raised by both government and customers.

“I want to express my gratitude to the management and staff of MTN who have heeded our call for more affordable, stable and reliable fibre broadband,” he said.

He added that the Ministry would continue its engagement with telecommunications operators to further improve service delivery and pricing for consumers.

“From the Ministry, we will continue to push for better service packages for the Ghanaian people,” he noted.

The reductions are expected to be welcomed by households, businesses, content creators and remote workers who depend on high-speed internet, amid growing demand for more affordable broadband services across the country.

MTN Ghana has yet to issue a detailed public response to the revised pricing.
