Ghana flags 100 universities as unrecognised over quality concerns

The Ghana Tertiary Education Commission (GTEC) has released an updated list of 100 universities it says are unrecognised, citing quality assurance concerns.

In a public notice dated August 28 2026, GTEC advised the public to exercise due diligence regarding certificates issued by the institutions.

The list includes several institutions operating or linked to Ghana, alongside universities and colleges in the United States, India, Nigeria, Switzerland, Zambia and other countries.

Among the Ghana-based institutions listed are Debest College of Science, Arts and Business, Faith University Seminary, Doxa Open University and Quest International University.

Others include Kingdom Living Bible Institute in Kumasi, Global Professional College in Effiduase, OAA Consulting Limited in Kumasi, Competency School of Business Administration in Kumasi and Global Executive College.

GTEC's list also includes institutions in Mexico, Costa Rica, Italy, Liberia, Barbados, Cambodia, Guyana, Kenya, Malta and Turkey.

The regulator said the public should exercise due diligence regarding any certificates issued by the institutions named in the notice.

The publication of the list raises concerns for prospective students and others seeking to verify the status of qualifications obtained from institutions operating in Ghana or abroad.

GTEC's latest notice places renewed attention on the importance of checking an institution's recognition status before enrolling on a programme or relying on a qualification for employment or further studies.

The regulator has listed 100 institutions in its latest update.
