Ghana delivered a disciplined defensive performance to hold England to a 0-0 draw in a tightly contested Group L match at the 2026 FIFA World Cup in Boston.

The Black Stars, regarded as underdogs against one of the tournament favourites, withstood sustained periods of English pressure and relied on a combination of organised defending and excellent goalkeeping to secure a valuable point.

England controlled possession for much of the contest and created the better opportunities, particularly after the break, but failed to find a way past Ghana goalkeeper Benjamin Asare, whose assured display proved crucial.

The Three Lions came closest to breaking the deadlock in the closing stages. Bukayo Saka forced a smart save from Asare in the 86th minute after being picked out by Declan Rice, before Nico O'Reilly struck the crossbar with a header moments later as England's frustrations mounted.

Captain Harry Kane was also guilty of missing a gilt-edged opportunity earlier in the second half, lifting an effort over the crossbar from close range. Noni Madueke and Elliot Anderson were similarly denied as England struggled to convert their dominance into goals.

Ghana, meanwhile, posed an occasional threat on the counter-attack. Mohammed Kudus showed flashes of quality in transition, while Jordan Ayew and Antoine Semenyo worked tirelessly to stretch England's defence whenever opportunities arose.

Prince Adu had Ghana's most promising opening of the second half, although his effort was blocked before it could trouble England goalkeeper Jordan Pickford. Semenyo also found space behind the English backline on one occasion, only for the move to be halted by an offside flag.

The match developed into a tactical battle in midfield, with both sides disrupting each other's rhythm through aggressive pressing and physical challenges. Ghana forward Iñaki Williams was booked as Otto Addo's side sought to contain England's growing attacking momentum.

Both managers turned to their benches in search of a breakthrough. England introduced Marcus Rashford, Eberechi Eze and Morgan Rogers, while Ghana responded with changes that included Abdul Fatawu, Prince Adu and Kojo Peprah Oppong.

Despite England's territorial dominance and greater attacking intent, Ghana's defensive organisation rarely wavered. Centre-backs and midfielders worked tirelessly to close spaces, while Asare remained composed whenever called into action.

The result leaves Group L finely poised heading into the final round of fixtures. England will feel they missed an opportunity to secure all three points, while Ghana can take confidence from a resilient display against one of the strongest teams in the competition.

For the Black Stars, the draw could yet prove significant in their quest to reach the knockout stage.
