Ghana snatch dramatic late win over Panama in World Cup opener

Ghana began their 2026 FIFA World Cup campaign with a dramatic 1-0 victory over Panama, as Caleb Yirenkyi's stoppage-time strike secured all three points in Toronto.

The Black Stars appeared destined for a frustrating draw in their Group L opener at BMO Field after struggling to impose themselves for long periods.

However, a swift counter-attack deep into added time provided a decisive breakthrough and sparked jubilant celebrations among Ghana supporters.

Panama made the brighter start and threatened within two minutes when Cecilio Waterman met a low cross, forcing Ghana goalkeeper Lawrence Ati-Zigi into an early save.

The Central Americans dominated possession throughout much of the first half, enjoying lengthy spells on the ball while Ghana struggled to create opportunities. Otto Addo's side failed to register a shot before the interval as Panama controlled proceedings.

Ati-Zigi was called into action several times and was involved in a heavy collision with Carlos Harvey while dealing with a cross. The goalkeeper later appeared to suffer a thigh injury and received treatment before continuing.

Ghana's concerns deepened at the start of the second half when Ati-Zigi was

unable to continue. Benjamin Asare was introduced for his debut at a major international tournament after just 46 minutes.

The change appeared to galvanise Ghana. Jonas Adjetey produced their first effort on target with a header, while substitutes Abdul Fatawu and Brandon Thomas-Asante added much-needed energy in attack.

Fatawu's direct running caused problems for Panama's defence and led to Cesar Blackman being booked after bringing him down on the edge of the penalty area.

Ghana came close to breaking the deadlock when Antoine Semenyo delivered a dangerous low cross towards Jordan Ayew, but defender Edgardo Ramos intervened at the crucial moment.

Panama also threatened, with Cristian Martinez firing into the side netting as both sides searched for a winner.

Just as the match seemed certain to end goalless, Ghana struck with virtually the final action of the game.

A Panama attack broke down in the fifth minute of stoppage time and Thomas-Asante surged forward down the left flank. After evading a challenge, he delivered a low cross into the penalty area where Yirenkyi arrived to convert from close range.

The midfielder, who had been drafted into Ghana's squad after Thomas Partey was denied entry into Canada, calmly finished to secure a memorable victory.

The late goal handed Ghana a crucial opening win and denied Panama what would have been the nation's first-ever World Cup point.

Elsewhere in Group L, England defeated Croatia 4-2 to move top of the standings after the opening round of fixtures.

Ghana will face England on 23 June in their second group match, while Panama take on Croatia on the same day.
