President John Mahama has sworn in Mahama Ayariga and Dr Zanetor Agyeman-Rawlings as ministers, telling them that Ghanaians expect measurable results, integrity and accountability from public officials. The two have also promised to work to fulfil the government's commitments to the public.
President John Dramani Mahama has sworn in Mahama Ayariga and Dr Zanetor Agyeman-Rawlings as ministers, telling them that Ghanaians expect results, integrity, accessibility and accountability from public officials.
The President said the two ministers must ensure that their decisions are guided by legality, fairness and the public interest as they begin their new assignments.
Mr Ayariga takes charge of the Ministry of Local Government, Chieftaincy and Religious Affairs, while Dr Agyeman-Rawlings is the new Minister for Environment, Science and Technology.
The two were sworn in at Jubilee House on Saturday, August 29, after Parliament approved their nominations.
“Let me remind you that the Ghanaian people expect results, they expect integrity, accessibility and accountability,” President Mahama said.
“They expect public officials to listen to them and act with urgency, so be firm where firmness is required. Be fair where fairness is required but always remember to remain humble.”
He urged the ministers to listen to professional advice, respect the institutions under their leadership and manage public resources prudently.
“Let every decision you take withstand the test of legality, fairness and public interest,” he said.
‘We will not disappoint you’
Speaking after the administration of the constitutional oaths, Mr Ayariga assured President Mahama that he and Dr Agyeman-Rawlings had listened carefully to the expectations outlined for their new roles.
He said they would work to fulfil commitments made by the government to Ghanaians during the 2024 election campaign.
“I want to assure you that we have listened carefully to your indication as to exactly what you expect of us as ministers of state and how you expect us to execute the assignment,” he said.
“I want to assure you that we will do exactly that.”
Mr Ayariga said the President's approach to governance and engagement with ordinary Ghanaians would guide the two ministers in carrying out their duties.
Their swearing-in formally marks the beginning of their tenures following their approval by Parliament after vetting by the Appointments Committee.
The two now face the task of translating the President's expectations into results in ministries with broad responsibilities, while operating under his call for transparency, accountability and prudent management of public resources.
