Hervé Renard takes charge of Tunisia after Lamouchi sacked in World Cup 5-1 defeat
Tunisia have appointed experienced French coach Hervé Renard as their new head coach following the dismissal of Sabri Lamouchi after a heavy defeat at the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
Tunisia have appointed experienced French coach Hervé Renard as their new head coach following the dismissal of Sabri Lamouchi after a heavy defeat at the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
The Tunisian Football Federation acted swiftly after the Carthage Eagles were beaten 5-1 by Sweden in their opening Group F match, a result that triggered strong criticism from supporters and media.
Lamouchi’s position had already come under pressure following disappointing friendly results against Austria and Belgium.
The former Stade Rennais manager, appointed in January 2026, departs after just five months in charge, having overseen one win, one draw and three defeats.
Only hours before his dismissal, Lamouchi had expressed confidence in his ability to turn results around, despite acknowledging uncertainty around the team’s direction.
Tunisia have now turned to Renard, one of Africa’s most successful international coaches, in a bid to revive their World Cup campaign.
The 56-year-old is expected to join the squad in Mexico immediately and will be accompanied by members of his long-standing backroom team.
Hervé Renard brings extensive international experience, having previously coached several national teams and guided both Zambia and Côte d’Ivoire to Africa Cup of Nations triumphs.
Tunisia will be hoping the change in leadership delivers an immediate response as they prepare for key Group F matches against Japan and the Netherlands.
The Eagles of Carthage face an uphill task to reach the knockout stages after their opening defeat, with Renard now tasked with restoring confidence and stabilising performances.
