Minority calls for urgent Accra-Kumasi Highway repairs after deadly crash
Ghana’s main opposition party says the latest fatal crash on the Accra-Kumasi Highway is a warning that unfinished road projects must be completed urgently to prevent further loss of lives.
The Minority in Ghana’s Parliament has called on the government to fast-track the completion of unfinished sections of the Accra-Kumasi Highway following a deadly crash that killed three people near Bonsu Junction in the Eastern Region.
The accident, which occurred at the Birimso Bridge on Monday, involved a State Transport Company (STC) bus, a fuel tanker, a Mitsubishi pick-up and a Kia Sorento.
Several others were injured in the collision, which also caused some of the vehicles to catch fire.
In a statement issued on Tuesday, the Minority Caucus expressed condolences to the families of those who died and described the crash as another reminder of the long-running safety challenges on one of Ghana’s busiest transport routes.
“Far too many lives have been lost on this highway, and the nation cannot continue to accept these recurring tragedies as inevitable,” the caucus said.
The opposition MPs are urging the government to prioritise the completion of ongoing works, bypasses and other unfinished sections of the highway, arguing that these interventions could help reduce accidents.
The Minority acknowledged plans for the proposed US$1.7bn Accra-Kumasi Expressway, describing it as an important long-term project.
However, it said the immediate focus should be on completing the existing highway, claiming that about US$300m could be enough to finish outstanding works and improve safety in the short term.
“The immediate priority should be to complete the existing highway that can save lives now,” the statement added.
The caucus warned that delays in addressing the highway’s safety challenges could lead to more avoidable deaths, and urged the government to accelerate work while preparations for the expressway continue.
