NDC opens 2026 elections process as party prepares for 2028 contest

Ghana's governing National Democratic Congress (NDC) has begun preparations for its internal elections, with nominations for national executive positions set to open in October as the party reorganises ahead of the 2028 general election.

The party's Functional Executive Committee (FEC) has approved a timetable for constituency, regional and national executive elections, setting in motion a process that will determine the next generation of leaders within the NDC.

Nominations for national executive positions will open on Tuesday, October 20, and close the following day, according to the timetable released by the party.

Aspirants will submit their applications online and will have 14 days to complete their nomination forms and secure the required endorsements before filing.

The filing of nominations for national executive positions is scheduled from November 7-9, followed by vetting on November 12 and 13 at the party's national headquarters.

The NDC said the process is designed to ensure transparent and credible internal elections in line with the party's constitution and approved election guidelines.

"The party calls on all regional and constituency executives, aspirants and members to carefully study the timetable and ensure strict adherence to all stipulated timelines, procedures and deadlines," the party said in a statement.

The internal elections will begin at the constituency level, with nominations for constituency executive positions opening on September 15.

Constituency elections are scheduled for October 24 -25, while regional and national elections will follow later in the process.

The party leadership says the reorganisation is aimed at strengthening the NDC ahead of the next general election, where it will seek to retain power in 2028.

The elections are expected to attract interest among senior party figures as members compete for influential positions that shape the party's direction, grassroots mobilisation and campaign strategy.

The NDC currently leads Ghana's government after winning the 2024 presidential and parliamentary elections, but the party faces the challenge of maintaining internal unity while preparing for the next national contest.
