Obuasi Senior High Technical School headmaster faces suspension over misconduct allegation

Ghana’s Education Minister has ordered the immediate suspension of the headmaster of Obuasi Senior High Technical School over alleged sexual misconduct involving a female student.

The minister directed the Director-General of the Ghana Education Service (GES) to take immediate steps to suspend Mr Zakaria Abdulai pending full investigations, according to a Ministry of Education statement dated 13 October 2026.

The minister has also asked the Police Criminal Investigation Department headquarters to investigate the matter. The statement does not confirm whether police have begun their investigation or whether the suspension has taken effect.

The directive follows an investigation by JoyNews and journalist Manasseh Azure Awuni into the allegation at the school in the Ashanti Region, the ministry said.

Signed by the ministry’s press secretary, Hashmin Mohammed, the statement described the matter as serious and called for immediate action by the GES.

The allegation remains subject to investigation. The statement announces no finding of wrongdoing against Mr Abdulai and does not include a response from him.

It also provides no details about when the alleged misconduct occurred, the evidence gathered or the findings of the journalistic investigation that prompted the directive.

The ministry said teachers had a responsibility to protect children entrusted to their care.

“Parents and Guardians have entrusted their wards in the care of teachers whose responsibilities are to protect and safeguard the children and not abuse them,” the statement said.

The Ministry of Education and the GES also said they would not tolerate misconduct of this nature in educational institutions across the country.

The next steps outlined in the statement are the implementation of the suspension directive and investigations into the allegation
