Parliament recalled for special sitting over urgent business
Parliament returns today for a five-day special sitting after Speaker Alban Bagbin recalled MPs less than a month after the House adjourned.
Parliament reconvenes on Monday for a special sitting after Speaker Alban Bagbin recalled Members of Parliament to attend to what he says is urgent parliamentary business.
The House will sit from Monday, August 24 to Friday, August 28, less than a month after it adjourned on 31 July.
Mr Bagbin exercised his authority under Order 58(4) of Parliament’s Standing Orders, which allows the Speaker to recall the House during an adjournment when circumstances require Parliament to resume.
The Speaker’s decision brings MPs back to the Chamber ahead of the next scheduled sitting, allowing the House to consider matters deemed too urgent to wait.
Among the issues expected to come before Parliament are the nominations of Mahama Ayariga as Minister-designate for Local Government, Chieftaincy and Religious Affairs, and Zanetor Agyeman-Rawlings as Minister-designate for Environment, Science and Technology.
The consideration of the two nominations is expected to form part of the business before the House during the five-day recall.
The recall highlights the Speaker’s power to bring Parliament back from an adjournment when urgent matters require legislative attention.
Parliament is expected to remain in session through Friday, 28 August, when the special sitting period is scheduled to end.
