Partey returns as Ghana and England battle for Group L supremacy
Ghana have received a major boost ahead of their FIFA World Cup Group L meeting with England after midfielder Thomas Partey declared himself fit and ready for selection.
The 33-year-old Villarreal midfielder missed the Black Stars' opening 1-0 victory over Panama after immigration and visa issues delayed his arrival in Canada before the tournament began.
However, speaking ahead of Tuesday's match, Partey said he was now fully fit and available for what is expected to be one of the standout fixtures of the group stage.
"For me, now I feel okay. I'm ready to play," he said.
His return strengthens Ghana's midfield options as the Black Stars seek to build on the momentum generated by their dramatic opening victory.
Ghana secured all three points against Panama thanks to a stoppage-time winner from teenage midfielder Caleb Yirenkyi, a result that boosted hopes of reaching the knockout stages.
Partey's availability comes at a crucial moment, with England regarded as one of the tournament favourites and among the strongest teams in the competition.
Despite anticipation surrounding a possible midfield battle with England's Declan Rice, his former Arsenal teammate, Partey insisted Ghana's focus would be on collective performance rather than individual match-ups.
He said teamwork, discipline and unity would be key if the Black Stars are to secure a positive result.
As deputy captain, Partey is one of the most experienced members of the Ghana squad and is expected to play a pivotal role as the team pursues a place in the Round of 16.
The midfielder also spoke of the positive atmosphere within the camp, saying the players remained focused and determined to make the most of their World Cup opportunity.
Ghana face England at Gillette Stadium in Foxborough, Massachusetts, on Tuesday, knowing that a victory would significantly enhance their chances of progressing from Group L.
The Black Stars will conclude their group campaign against Croatia in Philadelphia on June 17.
With qualification hanging in the balance, Partey's return could provide a timely boost for a Ghana side hoping to make another deep run on football's biggest stage.
