A 39-year-old man has been arrested in connection with the death of a student at the University of Cape Coast (UCC), whose body was discovered on a beach in the city.
The Ghana Police Service said the suspect, identified as Michael Mensah, was arrested on Monday evening following what it described as intelligence-led operations.
The victim, Innocentia Atsufui Avinu, a second-year student at UCC, was found dead at Hutchland Beach in Cape Coast. Police say investigations into the circumstances surrounding her death are ongoing.
According to preliminary findings, the suspect picked up Ms Avinu from Ayensu Plaza, located within the university's hostel enclave, on 11 June at about 18:48 GMT.
Investigators believe he later drove her to Hutchland Beach, where she was reportedly last seen alive.
Police said one of Ms Avinu's roommates told officers that the student had informed her she was leaving to meet an acquaintance. She reportedly left her residence in casual clothing but did not return, prompting concern among friends and relatives.
The suspect was arrested at Pedu Lorry Station by the Inspector-General of Police's Cyber Vetting and
Enforcement Team at approximately 19:15 GMT on 15 June.
Police said Mr Mensah, who reportedly claims to be a teacher and also works as a driver, remains in custody and is assisting with investigations.
Authorities have appealed for patience as inquiries continue and say further updates will be provided as the case progresses.
