Police officer arrested after two injured in Ritz Junction shooting
A woman wounded in the abdomen was referred to Korle-Bu Teaching Hospital, while another casualty was treated and discharged. Police say the officer’s pistol discharged during a confrontation with taxi drivers, but investigations are continuing.
A police officer has been arrested after two people suffered gunshot wounds during a confrontation at Ritz Junction involving the officer and taxi drivers.
The Adenta-Abokobi Divisional Police Command said General Sergeant Mathew Aboase, stationed at Madina Police Station, was in custody following the incident on Sunday, October 11 2026.
One of the injured, 34-year-old Gifty Nyimahen, sustained a gunshot wound to the abdomen and was referred to Korle-Bu Teaching Hospital for further treatment. The other, Doe Asinyo, was treated for a wound to the left thigh and discharged.
According to a police statement, preliminary investigations indicate that a confrontation broke out between Aboase and some members of the Ritz Junction Taxi Drivers Union.
Police said the drivers attempted to disarm the officer after he allegedly threatened them with his pistol.
The statement described the weapon’s discharge during the confrontation as accidental. That account remains a preliminary finding, with investigations continuing.
Police said the two people wounded were nearby when the pistol discharged.
Both were taken to Madina Pentecost Hospital.
Asinyo was treated and discharged, while Nyimahen was admitted before being referred to Korle-Bu. The statement did not provide an update on her condition following the referral.
The officer’s service pistol has been retained as evidence.
“The officer involved was arrested and is in Police custody pending further investigations, and the service pistol has been retained for evidential purposes,” the statement said.
The command assured the public that appropriate action would be taken in accordance with the law.
The statement did not explain what triggered the confrontation or why the officer allegedly threatened the drivers with his weapon. It also did not say whether he was on duty at the time.
Police have not announced any charges in the statement or given a timetable for completing their investigation. The circumstances surrounding the alleged threat, attempted disarming and discharge of the pistol remain under investigation.
