Power outage hits parts of Ghana as cause remains unknown
Homes and businesses across parts of Accra and several other regions have been left without electricity since the early hours of Thursday, with authorities yet to explain the cause or give a restoration timeline.
A major power outage has affected parts of Ghana, leaving homes, businesses and other facilities without electricity in the early hours of Thursday, August 20.
The disruption was widely reported across Accra, with residents in areas including Adabraka, Weija, Tesano, Achimota, Dzorwulu, Legon, Madina, Adenta, North Kaneshie, Teiman, Oyarifa and Abokorbi reporting outages from about 04:15 GMT.
Parts of the Eastern, Central and Ashanti regions were also reported to have experienced interruptions.
As of the time of reporting, the cause of the outage had not been established.
Power sector authorities had also not indicated when electricity would be restored to all the affected communities, leaving residents and businesses waiting for further information.
The outage comes less than three weeks after another widespread power interruption on July 29, which affected parts of Accra, Tema, Kasoa and the Ashanti and Eastern regions.
The recurrence of the disruptions is likely to renew concerns about the reliability of Ghana's electricity supply, particularly among businesses and households that depend on a stable power supply for daily activities.
Residents affected by Thursday's outage expressed frustration on social media as they waited for electricity to return.
For businesses, particularly those operating from the early morning, an extended outage could disrupt normal operations, although the extent of the impact from Thursday's interruption was not immediately clear.
The authorities have yet to provide an explanation for the latest disruption or a timetable for restoring electricity to all affected areas.
