Power outages hit after an overnight national grid disturbance. GRIDCo says restoration is under way as engineers investigate what caused the disruption.
Electricity transmission operator GRIDCo says it is working to restore power after a major disturbance on Ghana's national grid triggered outages across parts of the country in the early hours of Wednesday.
The disruption occurred at about 03:11 GMT when several power generation plants simultaneously went offline, causing a disturbance on the National Interconnected Transmission System and interrupting electricity supply.
The Ghana Grid Company Limited (GRIDCo), which operates the country's high-voltage transmission network, said engineers and system operators had activated emergency restoration procedures and were working with electricity sector stakeholders to bring affected customers back online.
"Our engineers and system operators are working continuously, in close collaboration with power sector stakeholders, to restore power within the shortest time possible without compromising safety," the company said in a statement.
GRIDCo said it had also launched a technical investigation to establish what caused the system failure.
The company apologised for the disruption, thanked the public for its patience, and said it would provide further updates as restoration efforts and investigations continue.
It was not immediately clear how many customers were affected by the outage or how long full restoration would take.
