President John Dramani Mahama has paid tribute to former President Jerry John Rawlings, describing him as a transformational leader whose commitment to accountability, social justice and national service helped shape Ghana's democratic development.
Speaking at the inauguration of the newly named Jerry John Rawlings House, the headquarters of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Mr Mahama said the decision to name the facility after the party's founder was a recognition of his enduring contributions to both the NDC and the country.
He said the headquarters would stand as a lasting reminder of the principles Mr Rawlings championed throughout his political life, including integrity, patriotism, sacrifice, courage, discipline and service to the people.
"Naming this headquarters after him is not only a tribute to his immense contribution to our party and our nation, but also a declaration that the values he championed must continue to guide our actions as a party and a government," Mr Mahama said.
He added that the building would serve as a constant reminder that leadership is rooted in service and that political power should always be exercised in the interests of citizens.
The ceremony also featured the unveiling of a bust in honour of the late former president, who led Ghana for nearly two decades and remains one of the country's most influential political figures.
Meanwhile, Mr Rawlings' son, Kimathi Rawlings, expressed gratitude to President Mahama and the leadership of the NDC for organising what he described as a historic occasion.
He said the event represented more than a symbolic gesture, describing it as a moment of reflection, remembrance and renewed commitment to the ideals his father stood for.
"By naming this headquarters after Flt Lt Jerry John Rawlings, the NDC has permanently inscribed his name into the very home of the ideals, sacrifices and aspirations to which he devoted his life," Kimathi Rawlings said.
The renaming of the party's national headquarters forms part of efforts to honour the legacy of the late statesman, who died in November 2020 at the age of 73.
