Shatta Wale says his mission is to inspire street boys to become great

Ghanaian dancehall musician Shatta Wale says his career is about inspiring young people from disadvantaged backgrounds rather than proving he is better than other artistes.

In a statement following his ShattaFest celebration in Accra, he described his rise in music as a message to people whose ambitions have been dismissed because of their circumstances.

“I didn’t come to fight for a position. I came to create a path where people who were told they would never make it could find hope,” he said.

The musician, whose real name is Charles Nii Armah Mensah Jnr, placed faith, determination and sacrifice at the centre of his account of his career.

“I came to deliver a message that even a boy from the streets can become a KING without anybody’s permission,” he said.

His statement followed the second edition of ShattaFest, held at the Accra Sports Stadium on Saturday, October 17, 2026. The annual festival celebrates his birthday and his supporters, known as the Shatta Movement.

Performers included Guru, Edem, Chief One, Mona4reall, Patapaa, Medikal and Fancy Gadam.

Shatta Wale contrasted his stated purpose with the pursuit of awards, applause and competitive standing within the music industry. He said criticism of his work and public behaviour would not change what he wanted to achieve.

“You can compare my music, question my methods, misunderstand my character, or even try to erase my contributions. But one thing you can never take away from me is the purpose God placed inside me,” he said.

He did not name particular critics or fellow musicians in the remarks provided.

The artiste, known for his dancehall music and outspoken public persona, presented his experiences of struggle as something young people could draw encouragement from.

“I am not here to be better than anybody. I am here to be everything God created me to be,” he said.

“My life is the message. My struggles are the lessons. My success is the evidence.”

The first major edition of ShattaFest took place at Independence Square in Accra on October 18, 2025. The event brings his supporters and other Ghanaian performers together for a live music celebration.

His latest statement focused on the example he hopes to set through his career.
