Tunisia: Sidi Bou Said residents welcome UNESCO inscription

It's been two weeks since Tunisia's Sidi Bou Said was inscribed on the UNESCO world heritage list, much to the delight of residents.

Located on a cliff, the coastal village was given the green light by the UN as they met in South Korea, as they also inscribed a handful of Japanese villages on the list.

Residents say they feel lucky to live in the village; among them is Aymen Ghamrasni, who says, "in addition.. the whole country, all of Tunisia, I know many foreigners and Tunisians who come from different regions specifically to visit Sidi Bou Said. Everyone envies us for having it. They tell us we are lucky to have this village."

The village is renowned for its white and blue architecture and mystical origins. Tour guides say the village has become increasingly popular for visitors across the world.

Ahmed Achouilia, an Iraqi tour guide, says, "we see that it has become something important in global tourism. It is the face of Tunisia. Anyone who goes to Tunisia should visit Sidi Bou Said. It has become a global destination, and that is how we think in Iraq."

The northern village gets its name from a 13th-century Sufi saint, and is constructed around his shrine.

Tourists say they're glad they chose the village as a destinaiton, and are impressed by its scenery.

Yassine Rhimi, a Syrian tourist, says, "Sidi Bou Said is the most beautiful village in Tunisia. It is distinguished, even by Guinness (World Records), with its blue and white colors. Tunisia has a beautiful and wonderful heritage."

Every year, UNESCO's World Heritage Committee inscribes sites on the list. The initiative provides countries with technical support and professional training to maintain the locations.
