‘We trust each other’: Ghana vice-president on working with Mahama

Ghana's Vice-President Jane Naana Opoku-Agyemang says mutual trust and a shared commitment to the government's goals have helped maintain a strong working relationship with President John Mahama.

Speaking on the KSM Show on Friday, Prof Opoku-Agyemang said there was little reason for fundamental disagreement within the leadership because the administration had a common strategy for governing the country.

She said her priority was to support President Mahama in implementing the government's development agenda rather than create unnecessary tensions within the leadership.

“We have a strategy. So what is there to fundamentally disagree about?”

Prof Opoku-Agyemang said she understood the pressures that came with being president and believed the vice-president's role included supporting the president in making key decisions.

She said Mr Mahama would have access to information and face pressures that other members of the government might not experience.

“He will see more than we would see. He’ll face more pressures than we would. So you try to defer as much as you can,” she said.

The vice-president said her confidence in the president was based on their long-standing knowledge of each other and the trust they had developed.

She said she trusted Mr Mahama to remain committed to the objectives they had agreed on.

“You know that he’s not going to do anything away from the agreed objectives. You know him enough, you trust him enough, and he demonstrates that enough,” she said.

Prof Opoku-Agyemang was elected vice-president alongside Mr Mahama in December 2024 and took office in January 2025.

Her comments come amid renewed public interest in the relationship between Ghana's president and vice-president and how the two work together in running the government.
