You carry our hopes” — Mahama rallies Black Stars ahead of Panama clash

President John Dramani Mahama has urged Ghana’s national football team to play with pride and unity as they prepare to begin their 2026 FIFA World Cup campaign against Panama.

In a message of support, the President said the Black Stars carried the hopes and identity of the nation as they make their fifth appearance at football’s biggest tournament.

He assured the team of the full backing of the government and people of Ghana.

“You carry more than a ball. You are carrying the hopes, dreams and heritage of a people,” he said. “From the streets of Chorkor to the plains of Bole, every Ghanaian heart beats in sync with yours.”

President Mahama described Ghana’s qualification for the tournament as a reflection of the country’s resilience and shared national spirit.

He also called on Ghanaians living in Canada and across North America to support the team in person, encouraging the diaspora to act as a “12th Man” by filling stadiums with national colours and creating a strong atmosphere for the players.

The President said government had secured official broadcast rights for the tournament, ensuring that matches would be shown across Ghana so supporters at home could follow the Black Stars’ progress.

He encouraged the players to approach the tournament with determination and discipline, adding that they were also representing young Ghanaians who aspire to follow in their footsteps.

“The world is watching, and we are confident that the Black Stars will shine on the global stage,” he said.
