13 killed ,18 injured in Accra-Aflao Highway crash
A Toyota Hiace and a Ford Transit travelling in opposite directions collided near MotherKope, leaving 13 passengers dead and others requiring hospital treatment.
Thirteen passengers have been killed and 18 others injured in a collision involving two commercial vehicles on the Accra-Aflao Highway.
The crash occurred at MotherKope, near God’s Love Herbal Clinic, in the early hours of Wednesday when a Toyota Hiace and a Ford Transit travelling in opposite directions collided on a hill.
The Hiace, registered GX 3186-20, was travelling from Accra towards Aflao, while the Ford Transit, registered GW 5558-23, was heading towards Accra from Aflao.
Preliminary information indicates that the Ford Transit struck the side of the Hiace, according to the Tema Regional Public Relations Officer of the Ghana National Fire Service, Divisional Officer Grade II Ebenezer Yenzu.
The cause of the collision has not been established in the information provided.
Mr Yenzu said both vehicles were extensively damaged, with the front and rear doors of the Hiace left mangled. Its driver was among those injured.
Firefighters from Sege received a distress call at 5:58 a.m. and arrived at the scene eight minutes later, at 6:06 a.m., to begin rescue and extrication operations.
The emergency crew rescued 18 passengers who were trapped in the wreckage and transported them to the Sege Polyclinic for treatment.
Some of the injured were later referred to the Ada East District Hospital at FaithKope for further medical care. Details about their conditions were not provided.
After the rescue operation, firefighters removed the damaged vehicles and cleared debris from the highway to restore traffic flow on the affected stretch.
