A day after deadly floods, Ghana braces for another storm

Communities still recovering from Monday's devastating floods are being warned to prepare for another round of heavy rain after the Ghana Meteorological Agency (GMET) issued a fresh weather alert for Greater Accra and several other regions.

The agency says a slow-moving storm system moving westwards from the coast of Benin is expected to trigger thunderstorms and rain across southern Ghana and parts of the middle belt later on Tuesday, raising fears of renewed flooding in areas already saturated by the previous downpour.

The warning comes less than 24 hours after torrential rains claimed lives, displaced hundreds of residents and submerged homes, businesses and major roads across the Greater Accra Region.

According to GMET, thunderstorms and rain are expected to affect the Greater Accra, Volta, Eastern and Central regions from 8:30am to 2:00pm before spreading to the Ashanti, Bono, Ahafo, Western and Western North regions later in the day.

Although the agency described the expected rainfall as slight to moderate, it warned that already saturated ground and clogged drainage systems could increase the risk of localised flash flooding in vulnerable communities.

GMET also cautioned that the storms could be accompanied by gusty winds capable of bringing down trees, damaging

utility poles and exposing live electrical cables.

Motorists have been advised to reduce speed, use headlights where visibility is poor and avoid driving through flooded roads.

Residents, particularly those living in low-lying and flood-prone communities, have also been urged not to attempt to cross overflowing drains or walk through floodwaters.

The latest forecast is likely to heighten anxiety among thousands of residents who spent Monday night clearing mud from homes and salvaging belongings after one of Accra's worst flood disasters in recent years.

Emergency agencies remain on high alert as recovery operations continue across affected communities, while authorities urge the public to monitor official weather updates and take precautionary measures ahead of the approaching storm.

With more rain forecast just a day after the devastating floods, officials say vigilance will be critical to preventing further loss of life and property.
