Abu Trica's whereabouts unknown after extradition order, lawyer tells court
The lawyer for Frederick Kumi, popularly known as "Abu Trica", has told the High Court in Accra that his client's whereabouts are unknown
The lawyer for Frederick Kumi, popularly known as "Abu Trica", has told the High Court in Accra that his client's whereabouts are unknown following an order for his extradition to the United States over an alleged $8m romance fraud case.
Representing Kumi on Monday, lawyer Oliver Barker-Vormawor made an oral application asking the court to direct the Attorney-General's Department to grant him access to his client.
Counsel told the court that despite the extradition order, neither he nor his client’s legal team had been informed where Kumi was being held.
"We still don't know where our client is being held," Mr Barker-Vormawor told the court.
He said he had formally written to the Attorney-General requesting access to Kumi but had not received a response.
The High Court temporarily stood down proceedings to allow the Attorney-General's office to respond to the request before determining whether to grant the application.
The development follows the court's decision to extradite Kumi to the United States, where he is wanted in connection with an alleged $8 million romance scam investigation.
Separately, the court adjourned an application seeking to stay the execution of the extradition order to July 9 2026.
Kumi was re-arrested shortly after the High Court dismissed his challenge against the extradition request. Security officers immediately took him back into custody to facilitate the extradition process.
His legal team has since indicated that it intends to challenge the extradition ruling at the Supreme Court of Ghana.
