Another Ofankor-Pokuase crash leaves one seriously injured

One person has been seriously injured in a four-vehicle crash on the Ofankor-Pokuase stretch of the Accra-Kumasi Highway, less than a week after another crash on the same road killed 12 people.

The latest collision happened on Wednesday morning and involved a VIP bus, a military vehicle, a Toyota Vitz and a four-wheel-drive vehicle.

No deaths were reported, but one person suffered serious injuries and was taken to hospital for treatment.

The crash caused heavy congestion on the Kumasi-bound lanes, leaving motorists facing significant delays.

The incident has renewed concerns about road safety on the corridor, particularly around the descent from John Teye towards Pokuase.

MCE calls for speed cameras

The Municipal Chief Executive for Ga North, Akwetey Agbo, has blamed recurring crashes on what he described as driver indiscipline.

He has called for speed cameras to be installed along the stretch to help enforce speed limits and deter motorists from speeding.

Mr Agbo said drivers should exercise greater caution when descending from John Teye towards Pokuase.

He also called for continuous public education and stricter enforcement of traffic regulations.

“If drivers obey the traffic regulations, there shouldn’t be a crash over this short distance,” he said.

He added that motorists who exceeded speed limits should face sanctions.

A road with a history of crashes

The latest collision comes days after a separate crash on the same stretch left 12 people dead and several others injured.

The road has recorded a number of serious accidents over the years.

In November 2016, an articulated truck reportedly suffered brake failure while descending from John Teye towards Pokuase before crashing into seven vehicles. Two people were killed and three others injured.

Road users have also raised concerns about conditions on the wider Achimota-Pokuase corridor.

In March 2026, motorists complained about non-functioning streetlights, with reports indicating that parts of the route from Ofankor through John Teye to the Pokuase Interchange were poorly lit at night.

Traffic conditions have also been affected by ongoing work on the Ofankor-Nsawam Road.

A traffic diversion introduced in July moved some Kumasi-bound traffic onto a service road between Festus and

Sapeiman, affecting traffic movement around Pokuase and Amasaman.

The latest crash is likely to add to calls for stronger enforcement of speed limits, improved road safety measures and closer monitoring of motorists along the corridor.

For now, motorists using the Kumasi-bound lanes are being urged to exercise caution as traffic congestion continues.
