Baffour Awuah reports to EOCO after court authorises arrest
Manhyia South MP Nana Agyei Baffour Awuah has reported to the Economic and Organised Crime Office (EOCO), a day after the High Court authorised his arrest to secure his attendance for questioning.
He appeared at the agency’s office on Thursday, October 1, accompanied by his lawyer, Samuel Atta Akyea, and political colleagues. His appearance follows a confrontation during an earlier attempted arrest at the Accra High Court.
Deputy Attorney-General and Minister for Justice, Dr Justice Srem-Sai, said the investigation concerns alleged unauthorised financial transactions at SIC Life Savings & Loans Company Ltd.
According to him, investigators are examining suspected financial loss, dissipation of public funds and money laundering. These remain allegations and have not been determined by a court.
The High Court issued the warrant on Wednesday, September 30, after EOCO told it that reasonable efforts to obtain the MP’s voluntary attendance had failed.
The agency also expressed concern that documents relevant to its investigation could be concealed, altered or destroyed, and sought authority to search for and seize them.
EOCO has said it invited Baffour Awuah twice in February before officers attempted to arrest him at the court premises on September 23.
His lawyers dispute the agency’s account of those invitations.
Sarkodie Baffour Awuah & Partners said the correspondence was addressed to him in his capacity as the firm’s senior partner and concerned SIC Life Savings & Loans, a client.
The firm said a representative subsequently attended three sessions with EOCO on March 4, March 18 and April 30 — and supplied information and a written statement.
