EOCO says Manhyia South MP ignored two invitations before attempted arrest at court
Ghana’s Economic and Organised Crime Office says it tried to arrest the MP on 23 September over an investigation begun in February, but could not complete the arrest. It is now seeking Parliament’s cooperation.
The Economic and Organised Crime Office (EOCO) says an attempt to arrest the Member of Parliament for Manhyia South, Nana Agyei Baffour Awuah, on Wednesday, September 24 2026, was unsuccessful.
In a statement issued the same day, EOCO said its officers had approached the MP in connection with an investigation that began in February. The office did not disclose what the investigation concerns or whether any allegation has been made against him.
EOCO said the MP had been invited to assist with the investigation on two occasions but had not honoured the invitations. According to the statement, officers then took steps to secure his attendance in accordance with the law.
The office said an officer approached Mr Baffour Awuah to explain the reason for his arrest, but was told that the MP’s parliamentary privileges prevented it. EOCO said the arrest “was not successfully completed” after discussions at the scene and consultations with the officer’s superiors.
EOCO said it was still investigating the matter and would review available video evidence to establish the circumstances of the attempted arrest.
The office also said it had requested Parliament’s cooperation to seek clarity on the privileges and immunities available to MPs. It said it would respect those privileges while pursuing its investigative responsibilities.
