Chairman Wontumi appoints Atta Akyea as lead defence counsel
Bernard Antwi-Boasiako, popularly known as Chairman Wontumi, has appointed lawyer Samuel Atta Akyea as his new lead defence counsel in ongoing criminal proceedings against him.
Bernard Antwi-Boasiako, popularly known as Chairman Wontumi, has appointed lawyer Samuel Atta Akyea as his new lead defence counsel in ongoing criminal proceedings against him.
The change follows the withdrawal of his previous lawyer, Andy Appiah-Kubi, who had indicated his intention to step aside citing developments in the case. His application to formally withdraw from the matter was, however, rejected by the High Court after a preliminary objection by the Attorney-General.
The court ruled that the application was incompetent, stating there is no legal requirement for counsel to seek court approval before withdrawing representation.
In a statement issued on Monday, June 15, Mr Antwi-Boasiako said the decision to reconstitute his legal team followed consultations and was made in the exercise of his constitutional right to legal representation of his choice.
He said the move was intended to ensure his defence is properly presented as the case progresses.
“I, Bernard Antwi-Boasiako (Chairman Wontumi), wish to respectfully inform the court, the parties, and the general public that I have decided to appoint Hon. Lawyer Samuel Atta Akyea as my new lead defence counsel in the ongoing criminal proceedings against me,” he stated.
He added that the change should not be interpreted as a reflection on his former legal team’s competence or commitment.
Mr Antwi-Boasiako expressed gratitude to his previous lawyers for their support during the proceedings, noting that every accused person has the right to choose their legal representation.
He also reaffirmed his commitment to due process, stressing that he remains entitled to the presumption of innocence until proven guilty by a competent court.
According to his statement, Mr Atta Akyea will immediately assume responsibility for the defence, review the case file, and take any necessary legal steps to protect his client’s right to a fair hearing.
