Deputy Chairperson of Ghana's Electoral Commission, Dr Bossman Asare, will resign from his position on 31 July 2026, the government has confirmed.
Deputy Chairperson of Ghana's Electoral Commission, Dr Bossman Asare, will resign from his position on 31 July 2026, the government has confirmed.
Government Communications Minister Felix Kwakye Ofosu announced on Monday that Dr Asare had formally notified President John Mahama of his decision and intends to return to academia at the University of Ghana.
"Dr Bossman Asare has submitted a letter to His Excellency the President indicating that, effective 31st July 2026, he will resign his position as Deputy Chairperson of the Electoral Commission," Mr Kwakye Ofosu told journalists.
According to the minister, Dr Asare cited his desire to continue his academic career as the reason for stepping down.
"He wants to go back to academia and pursue his career as a staff member of the University of Ghana," Mr Kwakye Ofosu said.
The minister added that Dr Asare expressed appreciation to the President and the people of Ghana for the opportunity to serve on one of the country's key constitutional bodies.
The announcement comes as the Electoral Commission prepares for changes in its leadership. Mr Kwakye Ofosu also confirmed that another Deputy Chairperson, Samuel Tettey, has retired from office.
He said the constitutional process to replace Mr Tettey is already underway, with a nominee currently being considered by the Council of State.
"The Council of State has already been given a nominee which they are considering, and once that process is completed, an announcement will be made," he said.
Mr Kwakye Ofosu added that arrangements would later be made to appoint a successor to Dr Asare following his departure at the end of July.
Dr Asare, a political scientist and academic, has served as Deputy
Chairperson of the Electoral Commission since 2018.
