Ghana's opposition NPP sets September vote to elect new national leaders
Ghana's main opposition party, the New Patriotic Party (NPP), has announced that it will elect a new national leadership on September 19, 2026 as it seeks to reorganise ahead of the country's next electoral cycle.
The party said its National Delegates Conference would take place on Saturday,September 19 2026, when delegates from across the country will elect National Officers in accordance with the party's constitution.
In a statement issued on Wednesday, the NPP's General Secretary, Justin Kodua Frimpong, said the decision had been approved by the party's National Executive Committee (NEC) and later endorsed by the National Council during meetings held on June 25.
The conference is expected to shape the direction of the opposition party following its defeat in Ghana's 2024 general election, with the new leadership likely to oversee efforts to rebuild the party and prepare for future national polls.
Ahead of the conference, the party has also opened a constitutional review process, inviting members to submit proposals to amend its constitution.
The General Secretary said the exercise was being conducted under Article 19(2) of the party's constitution and called on members and stakeholders to submit recommendations that would strengthen the party's structures and internal democratic processes.
The deadline for submitting amendment proposals is July 17, after which the recommendations are expected to be considered ahead of the delegates' conference.
The NPP said proposals could be submitted to its national headquarters in Accra or electronically through a dedicated email address.
The party said the constitutional review formed part of its
commitment to strengthening internal democracy, improving governance within the organisation and ensuring compliance with its constitution.
The National Delegates Conference is the highest decision-making gathering of the party and is expected to attract delegates from all regions of Ghana.
The election of National Officers will be closely watched as the NPP seeks to redefine its leadership and political strategy after moving into opposition.
