Macron to address reparatory justice conference in Accra
French President Emmanuel Macron is expected to address a major international conference on reparatory justice in Accra, the Government of Ghana has announced.
The disclosure was made by Ghana's Minister for Foreign Affairs, Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, in a social media post on Tuesday.
The Next Steps Conference on Reparatory Justice, which will be hosted by President John Dramani Mahama in Accra, is expected to bring together world leaders, policymakers and other stakeholders to discuss measures aimed at addressing historical injustices, particularly those arising from the transatlantic enslavement of Africans.
According to Mr Ablakwa, President Macron will participate in what he described as a good-faith dialogue on historical injustices committed against Africans and will outline France's position and commitments on the issue of reparatory justice.
The conference comes amid renewed international debate over reparations following the adoption of a Ghana-led United Nations resolution recognising transatlantic enslavement as the gravest crime against humanity.
The resolution has intensified calls for accountability and compensation for the lasting social, economic and political consequences of slavery and colonialism.
Organisers say the Accra meeting will focus on identifying practical pathways towards reparatory justice and strengthening international cooperation on addressing historical wrongs.
The conference is expected to serve as a platform for governments, advocacy groups and international institutions to examine policy options and advance discussions on justice, reconciliation and historical accountability.
