The National Democratic Congress (NDC) has named its national headquarters in Accra after its founder, former President Jerry John Rawlings, as part of commemorations marking what would have been his 79th birthday.
The headquarters in Adabraka will now be known as "Jerry Rawlings House", with a ceremony scheduled for Monday that will include the unveiling of a bust in honour of the former military leader and statesman.
The event is expected to be led by President John Dramani Mahama and attended by senior party officials, supporters and members of the Rawlings family.
According to the NDC, the renaming is intended to preserve the legacy of its founder, nearly six years after his death in November 2020.
The ceremony is being organised jointly by the party and the J.J. Rawlings Foundation under the theme: "From Revolution to Fourth Republic: The Rawlings Legacy."
A second event, comprising a public lecture and exhibition, will take place later in the day at the auditorium of the Ghana Academy of Arts and Sciences in Accra.
The keynote address will be delivered by lawyer and academic Tsatsu Tsikata. Other speakers include former Local Government Minister Akwasi
Opong Fosu and former Information and National Security Minister Kofi Totobi Quakyi.
Rawlings founded the NDC in 1992 after overseeing Ghana's transition from military rule to multi-party democracy. He served as president from 1981 to 2001, first as a military leader and later as an elected civilian president under the Fourth Republic.
The NDC said the commemorative events are intended to celebrate his contribution to Ghana's political development and honour his enduring influence on the party and the country.
