Sedina Tamakloe-Attionu controversy deepens as MP demands proof of her imprisonment

The controversy surrounding the whereabouts of former MASLOC Chief Executive Officer Sedina Tamakloe-Attionu has deepened, with Manhyia South MP Nana Agyei Baffour Awuah questioning the government's account of her imprisonment and demanding evidence that she is serving her sentence in prison custody.

His comments come days after Interior Minister Muntaka Mubarak sought to quell speculation over the convicted former MASLOC boss, insisting that she remains in the custody of the Ghana Prisons Service and is serving her sentence.

However, speaking on Joy FM's Newsnight, Mr Baffour Awuah said the minister's explanation had raised more questions than answers.

"When you listen to him, what is clear is that he sought to put finality to the controversy, but he has created more controversy," the MP said.

At the centre of the debate is the government's refusal to disclose the specific prison facility where Sedina Tamakloe-Attionu is being held.

While the Interior Minister has argued that revealing the location of high-profile inmates could pose security risks, Mr Baffour Awuah said the lack of publicly available records confirming her incarceration was fuelling public doubt.

"Where are the records confirming that she's in prison? Where are the records?" he asked.

The MP argued that imprisonment follows clearly established legal procedures, including the issuance of warrants and the formal transfer of convicted persons from police custody into the care of the Ghana Prisons Service.

According to him, documentation relating to those processes should exist and be capable of verifying that the former MASLOC chief executive is serving her sentence as stated by government.

"There are processes that lead to a person being taken into prison custody. There is a warrant which is supposed to evidence the person having been delivered into the custody of the prison service by the police," he said.

Mr Baffour Awuah further maintained that concerns about transparency could not be brushed aside solely on security grounds, particularly given the public interest surrounding the case.

He also suggested that Parliament should consider exercising its oversight powers more aggressively, arguing that a formal inquiry could require government to provide more detailed information.

The issue has become the subject of growing political debate following Sedina Tamakloe-Attionu's conviction, with opposition figures continuing to demand greater clarity about the conditions under which she is serving her sentence.

The Interior Ministry has maintained that she remains in lawful custody and has dismissed suggestions that she is receiving any special treatment.
